Thangkas or Thankas are rollable paintings of tantric Buddhism,
used for meditation in temples or in your house. Most of the Thangkas
show buddhist teachings to meditate on: Buddha, Bodhisattvas,
buddhist teachers, Gods, Godesses and mandalas.
Since the historical Buddha Shakyamuni (563-483 v. Chr.) died Thangka
painting has developed to a genuine tibetan fine art. Paintings follow
strict iconographic rules created by specially educated painters.
Special colours are used, made from precious minerals and also gold,
which is one reason for the fascinating bright and shiny appearance
of Thangkas.
Traditionally a Thangka consists of the fine art detailed painting
which is carefully worked into a frame of heavy brocade and a thin
sheet of silk or other material, used to cover the painting.
For centuries structures, proportions and colours of religious Thangkas
follow strict rules leaving almost no space for the artist's creativity.
The Thangka paintings are most precious the more his work is following
the old traditions and details.
We offer certain Thangkas without brocade in case you want to use
western stile picture frames for presentation.
